I spent a weekend with my beloved and pregnant cousin Elisabeth in Graz at the beginning of April. We really enjoyed the first days of Spring there, in this pretty maritime city and I definitely have to come back once again!
After our arrival we found out, that we haven’t spent a weekend together beside Vienna which is pretty insane, cause we spent every second of our teenager-years together… but I guess a city-trip is more an adult kind of thing. 😉 But now back to the facts… let’s start with the travel inspirations, tips and experiences.
What to do in Graz and where to stay?
Graz Hotel Recommendation:
Modern goes with traditional here… and first of all: The hotel is located where visitors to Graz most like to be – right in the Old Town, directly by the Mur, just a few steps from the eye‑catching Kunsthaus and very near to Schloßberg, Hauptplatz und Congress Graz. The location is perfect for a weekend-trip because you have every important sightseeing object right next to you. Regarding the design-standard I have to confess that we where a little bit irritated after our arrival because the hotel and the rooms does’t look like on the web-pics but all in all it was not that expensive, perfect located and the stuff was nice so it is okay.

Top Tourist Attractions in Graz and Places to Visit
Discover the city on foot:
Graz is a small city, which means it’s the perfect size to discover on foot to feel and explore the unique spirit of the city while walking. If your legs are more up to the task than your feet, you can also see the city by bicycle.
Schlossberg Graz: Have a look over the city
The top of the Schlossberg offers an incredible view over the entire city. It reminds me to Istanbul mixed with Milano because of the maritime look. We decided to go there by an elevator… an unusual, fast and comfortable way to achieve the ascent of Schlossberg hill. During the ride, the lift’s glass cabins offer a clear view of the illuminated, rock-lined elevator shaft and distant sky above – a mountain view from within.
Visit the Murinsel:
The Murinsel is actually not an island at all, but an artificial floating platform in the middle of the Mur river. This landmark of Graz was designed by New York artist Vito Acconci on the occasion of Graz becoming the 2003 European Capital of Culture.
The Kunsthaus Graz or Graz Art Museum was also built as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2003 and has since become an architectural landmark in Graz. Its exhibition program specializes in contemporary art of the last four decades and you really should have a look on this special building and the cafe as well.
Graz Restaurant and Cafe Recommendations:
Inside the Kunsthaus is this cool restaurant/cafe located where we had breakfast in the sun on Sunday. They offer a wide range of breakfast essentials, fresh fruits and you always get a croissant on top… hurray! I REALLY LOVE croissants! Don’t miss that!

The Aiola stop on the Schlossberg was definitely the coolest stop we had. You can enjoy the outstanding cuisine and the extended wine range on the terrace with an impressive view out over the entire city. It is the perfect place for a good start into the day but also for a short stop-over while sight-seeing.

We had dinner there on Saturday and it was quite nice and tasty. A few friends recommended the restaurant, which was the reason we gave it try and we really enjoyed it.
